Build the move around income you can actually use, care and insurance you have confirmed, lawful residency and a trial stay. U.S. citizenship does not make those decisions automatic.
Start with the household, not a retirement headline
Define who is moving, what activities and accessibility you need, how often you expect to visit America and which obligations remain there. A single retiree and a couple may have very different medical, housing and travel needs. Record the commitments you can change and the ones you must keep.
Verify spendable income
Use actual net pension and benefit amounts after deductions and tax provision. Confirm overseas-payment rules with the relevant administrator. Distinguish income already in payment from future Social Security, proposed employment or investment withdrawals. A budget is more useful when each income source has a clear basis and timing.
Get healthcare terms before choosing a destination
Medicare has limited overseas coverage. Confirm long-term residence insurance and the facilities and clinicians relevant to your needs. Military retirees should review their TRICARE arrangements separately; veterans should distinguish VA care rules from general coverage. A city’s reputation does not establish individual care access.
Verify residency and property separately
Ask PRA and the relevant authorities about current visa categories, required documents, deposits and fees. A property purchase does not automatically approve residency, and a visa does not override ownership restrictions. Keep restricted deposits and purchase capital separate from the cash you can use for monthly living.
Keep U.S. tax and account access organized
U.S. citizens generally remain subject to rules on worldwide income while abroad. Ask a qualified cross-border adviser about your filing and reporting circumstances. Confirm banking access, authentication, correspondence and transfer arrangements. Retain a reliable way to receive official notices.
Use a trial stay to replace assumptions
Rent in an area you might live in. Record actual spending, normal transport, internet, utilities and healthcare journeys. Compare the result with your spending ceiling and reserve. Revisit any decision that depends on an unverified claim, and keep a practical return-home option.
Put the first year on a separate sheet
Combine recurring costs with move expenses and accessible reserves, then list restricted deposits and other capital commitments separately. The affordability tools show monthly margin, a currency stress scenario and cash remaining after setup. They do not predict tax, benefit eligibility or lifelong financial security.
Questions Americans ask
Can U.S. citizenship alone qualify me for retirement residency?
Do not assume so. Confirm the current category and your circumstances with PRA and the relevant authorities.
Can I decide affordability from a low rent quote?
No. Include healthcare, transport, U.S. obligations, travel, contingency and upfront commitments.
Does the calculator determine whether I can safely retire?
No. It tests user-input cash-flow scenarios and makes assumptions visible.
