THE SHORT ANSWER

Use a complete household budget, actual quotes and a fallback reserve. An attractive rent figure alone cannot establish that your move is affordable.

01

Mistake 1: counting only rent and food

Include utilities, transport, insurance, out-of-pocket care, household spending and annual obligations divided by 12. Price the routine you want, not only the cheapest figure someone reported online. Use the cost-of-living guide to separate your spending ceiling from actual quotes.

02

Mistake 2: leaving America out of the budget

Some expenses continue after you relocate: debt, storage, insurance, account fees, tax preparation and family visits. List what you truly plan to stop and what will remain. Include return flights and an emergency fallback rather than assuming a one-way move eliminates U.S. costs.

03

Mistake 3: treating property capital as spending money

Purchase capital, one-time setup costs and required deposits do not belong in the same bucket as normal monthly expenses. Some funds may be tied up or restricted. Keep those commitments separate and consider what remains accessible if your plans change.

04

Mistake 4: assuming healthcare is a small fixed cost

Obtain written insurance terms before calling the budget workable. Age, exclusions, renewal rules, deductibles and access to relevant care can materially change a household’s plan. Do not use a small generic allowance as evidence that care will be available at that cost.

05

Mistake 5: using one exchange rate and no downside

Test a less favorable currency assumption, higher costs and an early return home. Replace estimates with spending observed on a trial stay. A calculator makes assumptions visible; it cannot guarantee that those assumptions will hold.
